A tribute to Beaugie, by: Lo Woods
His name was David S. Waite but we all new him as "Beaugie." He was a world class Rock drummer but his trademark was his singing abilities. He could sing anything! He had a unique voice that was individual even when singing the "copy music." He would adopt a song, make it his very own and do it his way which everyone liked better than the original version. When I started playing music with Beaugie in 1976 he was already a local legend. The following four years that I had the privilege of sharing the stage with him in "The Champion Band" only added to that legend and mystique.
*Beaugie passed away on March 2, 2002 at his home in Burlington Michigan. He was 49. Rest in peace Beaugie, we love ya!

The Champion Band was the most dynamic and entertaining act in the Midwest and Southeast United States during that period hugely due to the talent of this man. It was a well oiled machine that clicked in all aspects of Rock n' Roll performance. Charlie Kendal and I spent the time to get the guitar section right, Bob Jones was a musical virtuoso of sorts and an authoritive front man, Bruce "Snooky" Koons held his own as a bassist and could sing any harmony part no matter how high and Beaugie pushed it all forward with incredible force as a drummer and the main lead singer. In addition to the playing and singing skills of everyone on the stage, the band also set the standard for stage movement, choreography and showmanship throughout the region.
